Addressing Challenges in Resident Supervision

Clinical supervision, communication, and teamwork play an important role in patient safety and risk management. Cultivating these skills in resident physicians is a balancing act between oversight and autonomy for attending physicians. Each situation is unique and this course outlines several approaches involved in the attending-resident relationship, including basic communication and teamwork concepts, effective handoffs, and clinical oversight.

Learning Objectives

• Recognize the role of communications and teamwork in ensuring patient safety and understand the common barriers to effective communication and teamwork in the hospital setting
• Develop core communication/teamwork skills and implement specific strategies such as structured language, assertion, and psychological safety
• Use a standardized approach, communication skills, and appropriate technology to ensure successful handoffs
• Relate the goal of resident supervision to the respective responsibilities of attending physicians and resident physicians
• Identify effective and ineffective behaviors relevant to the attending-resident relationship, including those related to handling disagreements and addressing errors
